“If Any Man Sin”

Nov 20
2009

“If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” 1 John 2:1. {FLB 118.1}

“When we are clothed with the righteousness of Christ, we shall have no relish for sin; for Christ will be working with us. We may make mistakes, but we will hate the sin that caused the suffering of the Son of God.”  {FLB 118.2}

“If one who daily communes with God errs from the path, if he turns a moment from looking steadfastly unto Jesus, it is not because he sins willfully; for when he sees his mistake, he turns again, and fastens his eyes upon Jesus, and the fact that he has erred does not make him less dear to the heart of God. He knows that he has communion with the Saviour; and when reproved for his mistake in some matter of judgment, he does not walk sullenly, and complain of God, but turns the mistake into a victory.”  {FLB 118.3}

“There are those who have known the pardoning love of Christ, and who really desire to be children of God, yet they realize that their character is imperfect, their life faulty, and they are ready to doubt whether their hearts have been renewed by the Holy Spirit. To such I would say, Do not draw back in despair. We shall often have to bow down and weep at the feet of Jesus because of our shortcomings and mistakes; but we are not to be discouraged. Even if we are overcome by the enemy, we are not cast off, not forsaken and rejected of God. No; Christ is at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Said the beloved John, ‘These things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.’ And do not forget the words of Christ, ‘The Father himself loveth you.’ John 16:27. He desires to restore you to Himself, to see His own purity and holiness reflected in you. And if you will but yield yourself to Him, He that hath begun a good work in you will carry it forward to the day of Jesus Christ.”  {FLB 118.4}

“All sin . . . may be overcome by the Holy Spirit’s power.”

True Education

Nov 13
2009

“Every human being, created in the image of God, is endowed with a power akin to that of the Creator– individuality, power to think and to do. The men in whom this power is developed are the men who bear responsibilities, who are leaders in enterprise, and who influence character. It is the work of true education to develop this power, to train the youth to be thinkers, and not mere reflectors of other men’s thought. Instead of confining their study to that which men have said or written, let students be directed to the sources of truth, to the vast fields opened for research in nature and revelation. Let them contemplate the great facts of duty and destiny, and the mind will expand and strengthen. Instead of educated weaklings, institutions of learning may send forth men strong to think and to act, men who are masters and not slaves of circumstances, men who possess breadth of mind, clearness of thought, and the courage of their convictions.”

“A Discipline of Humility”

Nov 06
2009

A couple weeks ago a friend was telling me about how she likes to look at her field of study for new understandings about God and challenged me to do the same.  I had never thought about doing this before, but the past couple of weeks I’ve been looking for spiritual lessons in my field of study.  At first I thought that it would be difficult being a computer science major, but I have been surprised with what I’ve found.  It is neat to see how there are little lessons to be learned in every little area of our lives.

I have been taking a cognitive science writing class to fulfill a writing requirement this semester, and it has been interesting to look at the world from ‘their’ perspective.  So far we have been reading about different peoples views of the way the mind works, and how we can make an artificial brain that is actually capable of thinking.  The more papers I read on the subject the more thoroughly convinced I am that it is impossible to recreate the brain.  It is marvelous to look at the brain and all that it is capable of doing!  God’s creations are truly magnificent!  All of our feeble attempts at recreating something that is as powerful as the brain have been utter failures (sorry if I’m stepping on anyone’s toes).

My favorite AI said something that I thought was very descriptive of my field, “Computer science is a field of humility”.  Few programs that we write are ever perfect.  We are constantly searching through our code for bugs.  God doesn’t need to do this; He gets everything correct the first time!  Humans on the other hand, are sinful beings and are not capable of creating something of perfection as God has done.  The imperfections and bad things in this world aren’t something that God has brought on us, but rather what we have brought on ourselves by sin.  Praise God that He has provided a way for us to be saved from this world of sin and hurt!  One day soon we can sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to Him tell us how the brain works.

Greetings!

Living With Christ

Aug 16
2009
I found this poem while reading from The Ministry of Healing and wanted to share it here…
O, could I find, from day to day,
A nearness to my God,
Then would my hours glide sweet away,
While leaning on His word.
Lord, I desire with Thee to live
Anew from day to day,
In joys the world can never give,
Nor ever take away.
Blest Jesus, come, and rule my heart,
And make me wholly Thine,
That I may nevermore depart,
Nor grieve They love divine.

P53 Devotional

Feb 02
2009

Recently our church’s college group decided to start an early morning worship meeting where we meet at 8:30 before going to our classes. Each morning we have a short devotional and practice FAST memory verses followed by a prayer session. It has been a challenge at times to wake up early enough to make onto campus in time, but after the end of each meeting I feel so much more prepared to face the day. It has been such a blessing! (For my curious readers, P53 stands for Psalms 5:3, “My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; In the morning I will direct it to You, And I will look up.”)

Since we are preparing for a campus evangelism in late February, our devotionals are from the book Evangelism. Here is a quote from today’s devotional that I found particularly interesting.
Practical Godliness in Every Discourse.–It is harder to reach the hearts of men today than it was twenty years ago. The most convincing arguments may be presented, and yet sinners seem as far from salvation as ever. Ministers should not preach sermon after sermon on doctrinal subjects alone. Practical godliness should find a place in every discourse.” — Review and Herald, April 23, 1908.

There is so much more to winning souls than just Bible study and sermons. People want to see how being a Christian has changed us.
Come Close to Individuals.–In Christlike sympathy the minister should come close to men individually, and seek to awaken their interest in the great things of eternal life. Their hearts may be as hard as the beaten highway, and apparently it may be a useless effort to present the Saviour to them; but while logic may fail to move, and argument be powerless to convince, the love of Christ, revealed in personal ministry, may soften the stony heart, so that the seed of truth can take root.” –Gospel Workers, p. 185 (1915)
It is by living a godly life that we may be the greatest witness for Christ!
